SENIOR DENTAL OFFICER

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC available immediately
£70k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

As the professional lead for the island’s dental service, you will ensure that there are evidence-led policies, therapeutic protocols and guidelines in place, conduct clinical audits and quality assurance initiatives, undertake service reviews and make recommendations. Your role will cover direct clinical duties, oral health promotion work across the population, health information management, people and budget management, clinical supervision, training and capacity building. You will be responsible for the Dental Officer, two Dental Technicians, a Dental Therapist, three Dental Nurses, a Dental Hygienist and a Dental Surgery Assistant.

Clinical duties will include regular dental outpatient services and emergency care, out-of-hours urgent and emergency care service and treatment including dentures, basic restorative treatments, minor surgery and extractions. Your diagnostic work-up will include X-rays and you will offer care for dental trauma, maxillo-facial fractures and injuries, special needs and medically compromised patients. Treating patients under general anaesthesia or conscious sedation, you will provide basic orthodontic care with scaling and periodontal treatment for patients in the absence of a dental hygienist. It will be essential that infection control, ionising radiation protection and clinical quality assurance systems are in place.

As you own the day-to-day running of the dental practice you will review, evaluate, write and implement protocols, policies, guidelines and procedures. An active member of the senior management team, you will maintain clinical information for patients and handle staff management, support, training and CPD. Your budget planning, monitoring and management will ensure cost-effective service delivery. While you identify and plan the maintenance and procurement of equipment and clinical supplies, you will help to control stock. You must implement agreed arrangements for staffing, equipment maintenance and patient engagement. Providing regular service data, KPIs and annual report of dental care and oral health status of the population you will inform service planning and improvements.

Registered with the General Dental Council or equivalent, you must have a recognised dental qualification supported by substantial primary dental care experience. Up to date with all CPD requirements of your registering authority you are therefore able to maintain CPD requirements. You must also be compliant with Hep B medical requirements and willing to work flexibly, as some work outside of normal working hours may be required.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
