Here in the North West, we are on an exciting journey of transformation, transforming systems, process and structures to ensure oral health maintains a high profile within the health and social care system.

We are now seeking to appoint a self-motivated and innovative individual to the role of Consultant in Dental Public Health. The Consultant in Dental Public Health will be expected to provide strategic leadership and expert dental public health advice to North West NHSE/I Head of Primary Care and the PHE Region. You will provide advice, within the North West, to local public health systems and clinical dental services. to support and lead improvement in oral health, reduction of inequalities and provision of services to meet the oral health needs of the population. They will be expected to collaborate with PHE North West regional teams, Local Authorities, leads of the emerging integrated care systems, local dental networks, dental public health colleagues, academic dental public heath colleagues and the national dental public health network. Within the PHE North West Region, through their role, they will support the strategic PHE contribution to improving and protecting the public’s health and reducing health inequalities.

You will be contractually based at one of our three North West sites (although we are working remotely at the moment) with the requirement for travel across the region and within the geographical area of responsibility as relevant to the post.

Public Health England (PHE) exists to protect and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. We do this through world-leading science, knowledge and intelligence, advocacy, partnerships and the delivery of specialist public health services. We are an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care, and a distinct delivery organisation with operational autonomy. We provide government, local government, the NHS, Parliament, industry and the public with evidence-based professional, scientific and delivery expertise and support.

On 18 August 2020, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced plans to establish a new agency (then referred to as the National Institute for Health Protection) to lead on health protection in England and to consult on the best future options for strengthening health improvement and other public health functions in the wider system. On 24 March 2021, the Secretary of State announced the new agency would be called the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and on 29 March he announced the creation of the Office for Health Promotion (within the Department of Health & Social Care). Public Health England and many of its employees will be in scope for transition to new organisations in Autumn 2021. Any new or current employees working for Public Health England during this time, will receive appropriate communications and consultation prior to any formal transfer taking place.  Employees who are required to transfer to successor bodies would usually remain on their existing contractual terms and conditions (with any proposed changes being subject to consultation) and this applies both to current employees and those recruited during the transition.  The recruitment, growth & development of our workforce is vital for the continuing success of PHE, and the future UK Health Security Agency and Office for Health Promotion.

Applicants should review the job description for the post prior to completing their application. When completing their application form candidates should demonstrate how they meet the essential requirements of the role.
