Locum Dental Officer

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

6 months FTC commencing 24 March 2021

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care. Your role will cover direct clinical duties, oral health promotion work, health information management, people and budget management, clinical supervision and training.

You will offer a full range of general dental services; basic restorative procedures, root canal treatments, fabrication of dentures, taking, interpreting and diagnosing radiographs, complicated and simple extractions and minor oral surgery. Assisting the daily emergency dental clinic you will also take part in the school screening programmes and other aspects of the Community Dental Service and help in training and CPD. The post will be for six months with a probationary period of two months.

A Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent, you will have registration with the UK General Dental Council or recognised equivalent and be in good standing with that body. Holding vocational training accreditation you must be up-to-date with the latest guidelines, policies and procedures for ionising radiation, emergency medical procedures, prescribing medication, cross infection control, law and ethics, plus safeguarding vulnerable adults and children. Substantial experience as a NHS general dental practitioner will be essential.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded by the UK Government through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • Salary: £50k pa, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications, taxable in St Helena
  • A tax free International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at www.sthelenacareers.co.uk
  • Relocation Allowances, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at www.sthelenacareers.co.uk

  • 10 days leave plus Public Holidays
