We are seeking a forward thinking, dynamic Practice Manager to lead our dental service.  Offering general and dental services in a bespoke setting we are entering into an exciting period of growth and are seeking the right person to work with us to lead and develop the dental service.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

  • To provide leadership and day-to-day management of the dental service.
  • To ensure quality, evidence-based and safe dental care is consistently delivered.
  • To work closely with the multidisciplinary team to achieve / maintain an outstanding, patient-focused service.
  • To work closely with the marketing and business development team to actively promote the profile of the dental unit
  • To be responsible for the day to day management of the dental budget

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

  • To provide strong clinical leadership to all dental and other non-medical staff, promoting high standards of care and a responsive workforce.
  • To ensure day to day practice reflects the highest standards of governance, clinical effectiveness, safety and patient experience.
  • To demonstrate advanced knowledge and high standards of clinical practice in the field of dentistry.
  • To provide excellent communication skills enabling patients and their family/carers to understand their condition and management.
  • To ensure that dental practice is consistent with standards, policies and guidelines as determined by the organisation.
  • To challenge existing practices as appropriate, ensuring that solutions for best care are incorporated into the operational service delivery.
  • To ensure safe and appropriate storage and issue of medicines to patients.
  • To provide treatments and other interventions, as required.
  • To actively participate in health promotion opportunities according to individual need.
  • To evaluate outcomes of treatments/interventions.
  • To ensure that all patient records and documentation are accurate, contemporaneous, complete and processed as agreed.

Team Management

  • To act as lead for the dental team to ensure an efficient, effective and high-quality service to the patient.
  • To promote evidence-based care delivery and ensure that staff are aware of the requirements of them in meeting the patient safety, effectiveness and experience agendas.
  • To ensure that the dental team have the appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies to deliver the service, highlighting any deficiencies on a timely basis.
  • To ensure there are systems to implement, monitor and embed dental competencies.
  • To provide advice, guidance and support to dental staff regarding the care and management of patients.
  • To monitor and ensure that the dental team are following agreed clinical pathways / policies / procedures / guidelines and take any remedial action as required.
  • To ensure agreed staffing levels are in place for the delivery of safe, timely and effective patient care and that the dental have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide this.
  • To ensure that the dental team participate in the appraisal process and that all appraisals are completed within the agreed window.
  • To provide support and ensure that dental staff meet registration / revalidation requirements.
  • To ensure all members of dental staff complete relevant statutory and mandatory training.
  • To participate in and encourage reflective practice/clinical supervision amongst the team.
  • To ensure effective and timely cascade of information to relevant members of the team.
  • To chair monthly team meetings and ensure action minutes are produced and distributed on a timely basis.
  • To lead the framework for the management of dental staffing to ensure appropriate and efficient staffing numbers, shift patterns and skills mix.
  • To ensure annual leave is appropriately co-ordinated in order that adequate cover is provided.
  • To manage dental staff absence and any conduct issues in partnership with the Human Resources (HR) Manager and Director of Clinical Services.
  • To participate in the recruitment of dental staff.
  • To ensure that all learning from complaints, incidents, near-misses and audits are shared with staff and any identified actions are applied in practice.
  • To ensure stock, equipment and supplies for dental activities are managed efficiently and cost effectively.  
  • To work with administrative and clerical (A&C) staff to ensure that all documentation and patient pathway processes are adhered to.

General Management

  • To act as a strong role model for all colleagues by demonstrating professionalism and clinical creditability.
  • To work in partnership with the other Heads of Department to ensure good communication and a co-ordinated approach to patient pathways in order to maintain positive patient experiences.
  • To provide advice and support to other professional groups and staff and agencies within and outside the organisation, as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services.
  • To participate in the planning and delivery of relevant clinical service developments.
  • To communicate effectively with the wider clinical team and all key stakeholders.
  • To effectively manage the dental budget, ensuring that expenditure and income is within the agreed annual budget.
  • To provide regular information and reports as required by the organisation and attend OSD meetings, as required.
  • To participate in the Duty Manager on call rota.
  • To work closely with the marketing and business development teams in promoting the work of the dental department internally and externally.

Quality

  • To support the clinical governance agenda and ensure appropriate and safe care is delivered at all times.
  • To lead on CQC compliance for the dental service ensuring that standards relating to quality and safety are being met with evidence available.
  • To lead on the development, implementation and completion of audit programmes for the dental service.
  • To attend the bi-monthly Governance Committee meetings and contribute relevant reports, audits and any other required information on a timely basis.
  • To ensure appropriate learning takes place and that staff receive feedback from outcomes relating to quality systems/processes.
  • To develop systems to provide assurances that dental staff are receiving clinical and professional supervision.
  • To take a lead with the development or timely revision of nursing policies/procedures/guidelines, ensuring that they are applied in practice.
  • To provide regular feedback regarding all aspects of the dental service to the Director of Clinical Services, highlighting on a timely basis any quality issue that may impact on the continued delivery of a high-quality nursing service.
  • To participate in risk management processes ensuring that risk assessments for the dental service are in place and are reviewed on an agreed periodic basis.
  • To ensure that all complaints, concerns, near-misses, incidents or non-compliances are reported, as per OSD policy (Datix system).
  • To support and work with the Director of Clinical Services and lead on the investigation and management of complaints within the dental service.
  • To participate in any investigation which may be required ensuring appropriate statements are obtained in a timely manner.
  • To ensure the values, culture and behaviours of OSD are demonstrated through daily practice.

Professional

  • To practice in accordance with GDC professional Code of Conduct and maintain professional registration.
  • To keep up to date with current research, practice development, national guidance or legislation and ensure that new knowledge is widely shared within the dental team.
  • To ensure personal and professional development, maintaining a professional portfolio.
  • To participate in developmental opportunities, as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services.
