9am - 5pm
The Implant Dentistry MSc is an intensive clinical, academic and research programme for UK-based dentists with little or no experience in Implantology. Our mixed-mode course enables you to diagnose, plan and treat patients who need implant-supported restorations and bring implant dentistry into your practice.
About this degree
Modern implant dentistry is constantly evolving and presents challenges that require new skills. Our MSc programme provides the skills for dental implant case selection and planning, and to place and restore straightforward implant cases.
You will learn to assess, plan, and execute both the surgical and restorative aspects of dental implant treatment in straightforward cases. You will be able to identify low and high-risk dental implant cases, to formulate and prescribe an appropriate implant maintenance plan in relation to patient risk profile, and to recognise and manage complications in dental implantology.
The three-year Implant Dentistry MSc gives you an opportunity to progress based on your individual needs and interests. The programme offers online teaching combined with residential sessions of face-to-face teaching in London.
Who this course is for
The programme is ideal for Dental Practitioners wishing to develop their practice in Implant Dentistry to improve job satisfaction and to be able to offer patients a higher level of implant care.
This programme is open to GDC registered UK-based dentists and is ideally suited for dentists with little or no experience in Implant dentistry. Overseas dentists can apply to study the PG Certificate.
What this course will give you
This programme offers you the following benefits and opportunities:
- This blended-learning programme is ideal for busy practitioners working in UK dental practices.
- You will have the opportunity to treat your patients in our top-class facilities with specialist supervision.
- You will experience lectures in a seminar setting, hands-on workshops, interactive case discussions and treatment planning exercises. Live surgeries of patient treatment will be performed as well as video demonstrations.
- The programme is taught by experienced specialist dentists from the institute faculty and complemented by respected visiting clinicians and teachers.
The foundation of your career
This programme enables dentists to bring implant dentistry into their everyday practice. Students should be able to embark on implant treatment in their own practices during the programme.
Graduates will gain the skills for dental implant case selection, planning, surgery, and restoration of straightforward implant cases.
Employability
This Implant Dentistry MSc provides the skills to manage and treat implant patients, which will bring increased opportunities for working in private dental practices. It also creates opportunities for further study in the field of dentistry.
Recent alumni have progressed to the specialist programme in prosthodontics at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and roles such as associates in UK private practices.
Networking
There are regular networking opportunities, including events where you can hear from expert speakers. We encourage students to broaden their skills and expand their networks by attending and participating at conferences
Teaching and learning
We combine remote teaching with some face-to-face sessions. Remote teaching consists of webinars and self-directed study.
Face-to-face teaching comprises interactive lectures, seminars, hands-on training, live surgery, and supervised clinical treatment (both surgical and restorative implant treatment) in our state-of-the-art facilities.
During attendance days, you will engage in hands on practical skills work to develop practical and transferable skills. You will receive personal feedback. At the end of each attendance day, you will engage in a consolidation and feedback session with your peers.
Throughout the programme you will be assessed by a variety of methods, including unseen written and oral examinations, multiple choice questions (MCQ), short answer questions, in-class essays, practical lab exercises and presentations (PowerPoint, video).
Clinical case presentations and reflective portfolios are formative assessments, where candidates gather evidence across the board over their day-to-day practice of clinical dentistry in relation to the patients they treat and their reflective qualitative learning.
The dissertation will be a relevant piece of scientific research.
This part-time MSc requires 600 learning hours per year for three years (1,800 hours total). It includes around 574 contact hours over the three years. These are split into around 82 contact teaching days, as follows:
- Year 1 (PG Certificate) - 30 days (fortnightly virtual teaching, plus four blocks in London)
- Year 2 (PG Diploma) - 42 days
- Year 3 (PG Masters) - 10 days (one per month to support your research and dissertation).
Certificate
The first year has around 20 days of remote teaching via Teams, plus 10 days of face-to-face teaching across four residential blocks of two or three days on site in London. These blocks take place in October, December, February, and April. Each teaching day runs from 9.30am to 5pm. These sessions make up 210 learning hours in total. The remainder is used for reading materials, coursework, revision and other self-directed learning, to be spread evenly across the academic year (around 12 hours per week).
Diploma
The second year has around 42 contact days on site, spread evenly throughout the academic year. Roughly half are spent in clinic at the Eastman, assessing implant patients, surgically placing implants and then restoring them, all under direct supervision. The remaining days are for lectures and workshops on advanced implant topics and case presentations, and exam preparation. Each teaching day runs from 9am/9:30am-5pm, and forms 495 hours in total. The remaining 105 hours are for reading, case write ups and revision, to be spread evenly across the year (around 3-4 hours per week).
Masters
The MSc year is broadly self-directed learning as you work towards two pieces for assessment: a 4,000-word research paper and a 10-minute video presentation. You will have around 10 contact days spread evenly across the academic year, covering sessions on topics such as research methodology and statistics. Usually, you spend two full days onsite at the Eastman. The remainder are remote meetings with supervisors on Teams and may vary slightly depending on the demands of your research topic. The remaining 530 learning hours are to work towards your submissions and should be spread evenly across the year (around 10-12 hours per week). You will continue working on your dissertation during the summer of the final year.
