A conversation with MALCOLM BARKER, Managing Director, MBR Dental

Dental recruitment is a specialist area — and one that has been the sole focus of MBR Dental since its inception. Managing director Malcolm Barker started the business from his home; in just three years he has built the company both in size and in scope. MBR Dental now has five employees in an office in Birmingham, UK; a client base that extends to the other side of the globe; and is now looking to expand its area of expertise into other niche health fields.

 

What specialist services do you offer?
We place dental professionals including dental support staff, dental nurses, therapists, hygienists, dental managers (at all levels up to director), and of course dentists — including specialist dentists, in both locum and permanent placements; fullor part-time roles.

For any dental practice looking to recruit, MBR Dental manage the whole hiring process from start to finish. We have a good understanding of the working environment and a wealth of experience to offer, matching the right individual to the right job. MBR Dental use a range of multimedia platforms and make the most of our worldwide internet presence to publicise the roles. We manage all of the candidate screening and background checking and arrange interviews.

For any candidates looking for their next position, we learn as much as we can about them, providing a recruitment plan that meets their needs.

We give them the opportunity to apply for any of the roles where we think they might fit, not just the role that they have contacted us about. Our network means that we get new dental jobs from practices across the UK. We often headhunt for roles that aren’t more widely advertised, including where practices don’t want it known that they are recruiting. If there isn’t a suitable vacancy available for a candidate, we can approach the market to see what else is out there. We will find a new practice that is recruiting, or contact a thriving practice that is not currently recruiting actively. We also provide a weekly email job alert for candidates, as well as advice and resources on how to land their first — or next — dental job.


Why did you choose to focus the company on dentistry?
I have nearly 20 years’ experience in different areas of recruitment. Before I started MBR Dental, I spent six years at two specialist dental recruitment agencies, where I started to build up relationships and networks in this field. I love the industry and I’m hooked. I cannot imagine doing anything else. You never know where the job is going to take you. I have built some great friendships, I’ve met many interesting people over the years and recruitment has taken us to places across the world to destinations I would never of dreamed of recruiting for.


What advantages does this specialisation bring?
As specialist recruiters, we focus on collecting information and making contacts in our specific field and using it to support our clients and candidates. We have a database of thousands of dentists in the UK and beyond, and a broad network of new and established practices. We gather information on an ongoing basis on dental practices and their work environments and keep track of local and national salaries and remuneration trends.

We keep ourselves up-to-date on industry news and insights, both in private and NHS dentistry. We see ourselves as having a consultancy role, and offer all this support to our clients and to our candidates, particularly those going into their first job post-training. NHS processes are continually changing, and we make sure that we can provide our clients and candidates with the latest information on these and on compliance requirements and regulations.


What do you think makes you different from other dental recruiters?
Our values are what make us different – our strapline is “Our focus is you, our advice is free, and our business is national.” Our whole team is approachable and professional, and team members take the time to work closely with people, both clients and candidates. We are highly vigilant when it comes to confidentiality. And although we can’t place everybody, we still offer all our candidates support and assistance. We know our role is about more than just making a placement.


Are you working outside the UK?
We do have overseas work. It is still a small part of our business, but it is one that we are hoping to develop. We have worked with the government in the Falkland Islands to find a dentist for this remote community. We also have a client in Melbourne, Australia. Our global reach means that the candidates for these posts weren’t just from the UK.


What are your plans for the future?
We have achieved year-on-year growth and we hope that this will continue. We are looking to increase our reach in Australia, and are making contact with practices in the area. While dentistry will remain our focus, we have now moved into optical recruitment.
