Portman has been on an incredible journey over the last 12 years, growing from 1 practice in 2009 to over 200 practices across the UK, Ireland, Norway, Benelux and France. The organisation has seen rapid expansion and growth to be the UK’s largest privately focused dental group and the third largest group in Europe – all while staying true to its founding principles of protecting clinical freedom, putting people and patients at the centre of everything, and treating people like you’d want to be treated yourself.

As the business has grown, Portman has been building and strengthening their senior leadership team, bringing in some of the country’s most talented functional experts to lead each department and deliver market leading support to their practices, people and patients. At this pivotal point in their journey, Portman has appointed Julie Ross into the role of Managing Director for UK and Ireland to oversee and maintain further planned growth in a sustainable way. Julie is a highly experienced consumer healthcare leader who joined Portman three years ago after five years at Pets at Home where she was a crucial part of the successful expansion of the Pets at Home Vet Group.

Alongside her extensive strategy roles, Julie is a qualified veterinary surgeon and spent six years practicing as a specialist equine vet before moving into her corporate career which makes her well placed to understand the stresses and demands of clinical life.

When asked about the change in leadership, Founder Sam Waley-Cohen, who will move into the role of Portman Group CEO said:

“Portman’s growth has been fuelled by the incredible people who have joined the group. Julie is an exceptional leader, operator, strategic and commercial thinker, has a clear vision for Portman’s market ambitions and embodies our unique culture and values. Julie is already leading much of the day-to-day operations in the UK and Ireland and will ensure a seamless transition to the new responsibility.

Julie Ross said:

“I’m honoured and excited by the opportunity to lead Portman UK and Ireland on the next phase of our journey. With a clinical background, I welcome opportunity to ensure the highest levels of care for all of our present and future patients.  I truly believe, with a clear vision, engaged talent, and the right values, clinical groups provide great opportunities for clinicians, colleagues and patients.  I’m really looking forward to continuing to build Portman into the best dental group in the world.

“My passion in business is around how to make business work for everyone – the people who work in it, the customers it serves, the communities it exists in – as well, of course, as the shareholders we serve.  We have a huge opportunity in dentistry to do things differently.  We’ve made a great start on this journey in Portman and I’m really looking forward to the new challenge.
